Oakdale Wind Park

A Wind Farm development on a reclaimed former colliery site in South Wales where the presence of coal seams and geological faults required a very detailed and targeted geotechnical assessment to be undertaken to demonstrate that the turbine foundations would not be compromised. The analysis confirmed that despite the presence of the coal seams running below the turbine locations, the thickness of overlying competent sandstone was such that shallow reinforced raft foundations would be suitable to support the proposed Senvion MM100 turbines. This was the first project in the UK to use these 50m blade diameter turbines to maximize the energy generation capacity on a site which otherwise appeared unviable. Completed in early 2014 the wind farm is projected to offer a reduction in CO2 output compared to conventional generation of 2,700 Tonnes per year.
